This red, itching and irritating rash is associated with shaved areas. It is caused by the normal skin bacteria (Staphylococcus) accessing the lower levels of the skin due to small abrasions following shaving.
Avoid shaving an infected area until the problem has cleared.
The use of aftershave causes a reflex closure of opened pores and also acts as a mild antiseptic against skin bacteria for a short while. Its use, especially on skins with a tendency to shaving rash, may be painful but lessens the risk of infection.
Choose an aftershave that is as non-medicated as possible and use small amounts because the chemicals used in proprietary types may cause local or toxic problems.
