The brain and nervous system

There are four specialisms that deal with the brain and nervous system. The neurologist specializes in dis- eases of the brain and nervous system. He has a wide knowledge of the functional anatomy of the nervous system and expertise in interpreting all kinds of reflexes. Some specific investigative methods in neurology are the lumbar puncture, the electroencephalogram. The electromyogram, and myelography. Also frequently used is the CAT scan method, ultrasound and angiography to detect various diseases in the brain.

The neurosurgeon is a superspecialist who has applied himself to operations on parts of the nervous system. Apart from the well-known ‘heroic’ brain operations. He also does hernia operations (laminectomy) and lots of smaller operations.
