The sloe (primus spinosa) is the fruit of the blackthorn tree, which grows throughout Europe. The tree is small and bush- like, rarely exceeding 10 feet in height, and has dark purple-black thorny shoots.

The fruit produced by the tree is small and hard, with a blue-black skin and sour yellow-green flesh. The sloe is inedible raw but is used in the preparation of liqueurs such as SLOE GIN and, with other fruit, in the preparation of jellies and jams.
