Prune is the dried fruit of certain species of red or black PLUMS. They are produced by drying plums on the tree, by removing them from the tree and drying them in artificial heat, or a combination of both. The stones are not usually removed from the fruit.

Prunes are produced in the United States, especially in California and in Europe. Yugoslavia is the largest Euro-pean producer of prunes.

Prunes may be stored for long periods of time without deterioration. They act as a mild laxative and contribute some calcium, vitamin A and iron to the diet.
