Inflammation of the rectum, the last section of the intestine before the anus. The condition is often part of more general inflammation, for example of the whole large intestine, as in ulcerative colitis, or the result of infection with gonorrhoea. Symptoms are directly dependent upon the cause, and include diarrhoea and loss of mucus and blood. Gonorrhoea is associated with pain and a burning sensation, and a white or yellow discharge. Diagnosis can be by rectoscopy, with a bacterial culture to confirm gonorrhoea or other bacterial infections. Treatment is according to the particular condition.
