Polyp, nasal

Soft protusion of mucous membrane that occurs in the nose and elsewhere. Nasal polyps can occur inside the nose or on the mucous membrane of the sinuses. The glassy, bluish-grey polyps are benign, but can cause difficulties in breathing through the nose, problems with smell and speech through obstruction of the nasal cavity, and inflammation that can be difficult to treat if the polyp blocks the normal flow of mucus. Patients susceptible to hay fever and other allergies are more frequently troubled by polyps than others. Polyps are probably caused by several factors, including repeated bacterial and viral infections.
