Undesirable hair growth on the face, arms, legs and chest of women; the border between normality and hirsutism is not always clear, however. The condition can have various causes, particular conditions resulting in an excess of male hormone such as an ovarian or adrenal tumour and the Stein-Leventhal syndrome, or medication that has side-effects similar to those of male hormone. Treatment is by surgery, radiation therapy or medication, depending on the precise cause. There is also a form of hirsutism for which no cause can be found, known as ideopathic hirsutism; only the symptoms can be treated, by cutting off the hair, depilation or bleaching.
