Heather Ale

Heather ale is a celebrated drink originally made by the Picts and still obtainable in the highlands and islands of Scotland.

Heather in full bloom is the main ingredient, and ginger, hops and golden syrup are added, with yeast to ferment the mixture.

Heather ale was also reputed to contain another ingredient which gave it magical qualities, and the exact recipe for this was kept a closely guarded secret. There are many folk tales of the fearful fates that befell those who tried to steal the secret!

Heather ale is now manufactured commercially, has a sweet flavour, a low alcoholic content and makes a light, refreshing drink.
