depression, post-natal

Serious depression in a woman after the birth of a baby. The term is in a sense inaccurate, because the use of the word natal would tend to suggest depression in the baby. It is entirely natural that a new mother should go through a period of psychological imbalance, because often psychic resilience is lowered. The arrival of the child completely transforms the life of the woman, and her partner. The new-born baby may arouse conflicting emotions. On the one hand she is entirely delighted, on the other she in anxious about the future and motherhood; this anxiety may become directed at the child, arousing guilt feelings. The mother is often moved to tears by trifles, and is quickly irritated by those around her; she may herself find these feelings and emotions
