Depersonalization

Feeling of alienation from self, body and surroundings. The patient may feel that he is not in the room, but looking at it through glass; not talking to people, but watching a film; senses that his arm is not his arm. The sense of judgement is not impaired, as in delusion. Depersonalization is unpleasant because it is often associated with loss of emotional reactions. The patient sees himslef as cold and empty. Despite this, the condition often occurs without serious abnormality in cases of fatigue, poor physical condition or stress. Chronic depersonalization occurs at certain stages in life (puberty, menopause, shortly after childbirth) and in association with neuroses such as hysteria. Depersonalization can also be associated with more serious disorders (such as schizophrenia). Sufferers from depersonalization do not always recognize their own face.
