A blackcurrant syrup or liqueur of 15 to 20 per cent alcohol, Cassis is Very popular in France. It is drunk by itself, or mixed with water or vermouth. Creme de Cassis is a sweeter version, drunk only as a liqueur.

Cassis is also a name given to red, white and rose wines originating in vineyards just southeast of Marseilles.
