Apraxia

Inability to perform certain acts although the muscles are intact and the patient understands what he should do. The cause is a condition of the cerebral cortex caused by a stroke, dementia with widespread loss of brain cells, or a tumour. In mild cases the patient seems clumsy and absent-minded, in more serious cases simple implements are used wrongly – for example eating with a tooth-brush. Imitation of acts can also be disturbed.
