This is a pneumonia that is caused by a bacterium called Legionnaire’s bacillus. It is so called because it was first recognized at a convention of the American Legion in 1976. It is a dangerous pneumonia because it affects the kidneys, the bowel, the liver and the nervous system.
The Legionnaire’s bacillus lives comfortably in air conditioning units and is spread through airborne transmission.
