Hyperlipidaemia is the medical term for an excess of fats in the bloodstream. There are many types but basically the two that are measured are cholesterol and triglycerides. These two compounds are essential for the integrity of cell membranes and are involved in many biochemical processes.

An excess of triglycerides without a rise in cholesterol levels is generally associated with the eating of a fatty meal and should not be considered a particular risk.
