This is the extrusion of the lower part of the intestinal tract through the sphincter of the anus. This condition is generally created by a weakness of the anus through trauma or marked intra-abdominal pressure. Severe infections such as cholera, which may create marked weakness within muscles and frequent diarrhoea, may cause a prolapse. Pressure from a tumour or strain from chronic constipation may cause an anal or even rectal prolapse.

Any suggestion of a prolapse of the anus must be reviewed by a doctor.

Conscious pulling up of the anus is a method of strengthening the anal splincter and may relieve a prolapse created by internal pressure derived from constipation.
