Zandam Bread Bake makes an unusual and tasty accompaniment to meat or poultry dishes.
1 tablespoon butter
1 large unsliced white loaf, thickly sliced with the crusts removed
8 oz. cooked ham, finely chopped
8 oz. Gruyere cheese, grated
3 eggs, lightly beaten
16 fl. oz. milk
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoon black pepper
Preheat the oven to moderate 350°F (Gas Mark 4, 180°C). Using the tablespoon of butter, grease a medium-sized ovenproof baking dish. Set aside.
Cut the bread slices into 1-inch cubes. Place a layer of bread cubes on the bottom of the dish. Cover the bread with a layer of ham. Place a layer of cheese over the ham. Continue making layers in this way until all the bread, ham and cheese are used up, ending with a layer of bread.
In a medium-sized mixing bowl, beat the eggs, milk, salt and pepper together. Pour this mixture over the bread, ham and cheese. Place the dish in the centre of the oven and bake for 45 minutes.
Remove the dish from the oven and serve immediately.
