Vinho Verde (vee-noh vair-day) is one of the most famous of the Portuguese wines. It owes its name (which means, literally, green wine) less to its appearance than to the fact that it is bottled when it is very young and barely fermented.
Although Vinho Verdes can be red, Vinegared Beef and Beans makes a tasty and sustaining family meal. white or rose, the white wines are by far the best and are the only ones available outside the country. They have a delicate and fresh taste, with a slight ‘fizz’ to them. They make an excellent summer drink when well-chilled.
