Venereal diseases

Contagious diseases transmitted by sexual contact, also known as sexually transmitted diseases. Most involve inflammation of the skin and mucous membranes. Besides well-known disorders such as syphillis and gonorrhoea there are many others now known to fall into this category, such as genital herpes, or conditions like lymphogranuloma venereum and granuloma inguinale. Disorders such as AIDS and hepatitis B can also be transmitted sexually, but are not usually classified as venereal diseases. Venereal diseases are not only transmitted by penis-vagina contact, but also by anal intercourse, contact of mouth with genitals or anus, mouth-to-mouth kissing or contact of mouth or genitals with infected skin.
