Vaginismus

Involuntary contraction of the muscles around the opening of the vagina which prevent penetration by the penis during intercourse, often leading to frustrations and loss of libido Some women are able to find satisfaction in other sexual activities and attain orgasm. There are various causes, such as fear of sexual intercourse because of an unpleasant occurrence in the past (such as rape), an upbringing in which sex is regarded as sinful, or a physical abnormality in which vaginismus occurs in order to prevent pain. Vaginismus is susceptible to treatment. If physical causes have been ruled out and any possible emotional problems have been dealt with, the woman is taught to relax her body and thereby gradually to obtain self-confidence and control.
