A plant of the GINGER family, turmeric, curcuma longa, is grown in India and other parts of tropical Asia. The roots of the plant are dried and ground into a bright yellow powder, which has an aromatic smell and a slightly bitter flavour.

Turmeric is used to colour and flavour foods. It is added to rice dishes, pickles and chutneys and is an essential in- gredient in commercial curry powder.
