Treacle is a by-product of the sugar refining process. The name treacle is sometimes given to molasses and golden syrup but usually means a dark, heavier syrup. For further information see the individual entries under GOLDEN SYRUP and MOLASSES.

In the following treacle recipes, we have used a higher proportion of treacle or molasses to golden syrup. However, if you prefer a lighter taste, use less treacle or molasses and more syrup, keeping to the total amount given.
