Scallion (allium fistulam) is a relation of the ONION and is also sometimes known as Welsh onion. It originated in eastern
Asia and was introduced into Europe to-wards the end of the Middle Ages. In China and Japan it is the principal onion cultivated for cooking. In western coun-tries the spring onion or shallot may be substituted for the scallion, as they resemble it in flavour and appearance.
In the United States the word scallion is used to refer to a spring onion.
