Sandwich

A sandwich, basically, is two layers of bread, usually buttered, enclosing a savoury or sweet filling. There are literally hundreds of possible varieties, varying from toasted savoury sandwiches to rolls enclosing sausages.

The name is said to have derived from the Earl of Sandwich, a keen gambler, who wanted something easy to eat while he was still at the gaming-table so as not to interrupt the game!
