Nutmeg is the seed of the fruit of the nutmeg tree, an evergreen indigenous to the Molucca Islands in Indonesia.
The nutmeg is brownish in colour, about 1 inch in diameter and oval in shape. The honeycombed outer covering of the nutmeg is removed and marketed separately as MACE.
Nutmeg may be bought whole, grated or ground. The best and most pungent flavour is obtained from freshly grated whole nutmeg.
Nutmeg is used extensively in cooking as a flavouring for sweet and savoury dishes and many warm drinks.
