Mulled Wine

A perfect drink for winter parties or for convivial evenings at home, Mulled Wine cheers up the cheapest ‘plonk’ orvin ordinaire and makes of it something special. This recipe is a basic one, but almost any spice of your choice may be added, and some mulled wine enthusiasts say that the addition of a little brandy gives the drink that much more of a ‘kick’.

26 fl. oz. , or

1 bottle, dry red wine juice and thinly pared rind of

1 lemon

2 teaspoon grated nutmeg

2-inch cinnamon stick

3 tablespoons sugar

1 lemon, thinly sliced

Pour the wine into a medium-sized saucepan and add the juice and rind of the lemon, the nutmeg, cinnamon stick and sugar.

Place the pan over moderately high heat and bring the mixture to the boil, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar.

Boil the mixture for 2 minutes.

Remove the pan from the heat and remove and discard the lemon rind and cinnamon stick. Pour the wine mixture into a large jug and garnish with the lemon slices. Serve hot.
