The mulberry is the fruit of the mulberry tree which is thought to be native to Western Asia. In appearance it is similar to the blackberry and ranges from red to dark purple in colour. The mulberry has a brief season from August to the begin- ning of September and should be picked only when it is fully ripe. It is only produced commercially for canning, since it does not travel well.
Mulberries may be eaten raw with cream and sugar, but more usually they are used with apples in pies, jams and jellies.
