Macaroons are small round biscuits made from ground almonds, egg whites and sugar. Their origin is unknown though both the Italians and the French claim to have invented them. The best macaroons come from the city of Nancy in Lorraine where they have been making them for over 300 years.

Many different kinds of macaroons have evolved over the years with other nuts replacing the almonds.
