Lychec, also spelt litchi and lichi, is the fruit of a tree native to Southern China. Now grown in many tropical and sub- tropical countries throughout the world, the lychee is a favourite fruit of the Chinese.
Lychees are oval to round fruit about 1-inch in diameter and a fresh red in colour which turns brown if the fruit is kept too long. The outer covering is semi-hard, brittle and warty and is removed to disclose a pearly-white translucent juicy flesh and one large brown seed. It has a slightly acid and most delicious flavour sometimes compared to a muscat grape.
Lychces are easily obtainable canned and sometimes fresh.
