Hesperantha in the greenhouse

These are deciduous plants with bulbous roots. The flowers open in the evening, and are very sweetly scented. Pot in November in a compost of two parts sandy loam, one part leaf-mould or decayed manure and a little sand. Five bulbs should be allowed for a 5-in. Pot, and these should be set 3 in. deep.

Until growth commences the pots should be plunged into ashes, and when the shoots appear they should be placed in the green-house in a temperature of 45 to 50 degrees. The plants should be kept quite moistuntil the flowers fade and then watering should gradually cease, and the plants be kept quite dry from September to January, when the bulbs should be lifted, until planting time in November. Increase by offsets treated as bulbs.
