Gurkenbowle

A light, easy to make punch, Gurkenbowle (gur-kehn-bowl) is fairly economical. If you are making this punch in a hurry, uncork the red wine and chill it while you chill the cucumber mixture.

10 SERVINGS

1 small cucumber small orange, thinly sliced

1 tablespoons castor sugar

2 fl. oz. orange juice

2 fl. oz. orange-flavoured liqueur

26 fl. oz. dry red wine (1 bottle)

12 ice cubes

1 pint soda water

With a sharp knife, peel the cucumber. Cut the skin into thin strips. Thinly slice the cucumber flesh. Place the skin and flesh in a punch bowl with the orange slices, sugar, orange juice and orange-flavoured liqueur. Place the bowl in the refrigerator to chill for 30 minutes.

Remove the bowl from the refrigerator and stir in the red wine. Return the bowl to the refrigerator and chill for a further 30 minutes.

Remove the punch bowl from the refrigerator, stir in the ice and the soda water and serve immediately.
