Gluhwein

A popular warming southern German punch, Gluhioein (gloo-vine) makes a wonderful contribution to winter party. Cheap red wine may be used since the sugar, spices, brandy and zoarmth disguise any roughness.

26 fl. oz. red wine (1 bottle)

3 TO 4 oz. sugar

2-inch cinnamon stick, halved lemon stuck with

6 cloves

½ teaspoon ground allspice

1 fl. oz. brandy

In a medium-sized saucepan, heat the wine, 3 ounces of the sugar, the cinnamon stick, lemon and allspice over moderate4 heat until the wine comes to the boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Taste the mixture and stir in more sugar if necessary.

Reduce the heat to low and simmer the mixture for 2 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat, stir in the brandy and strain’ the liquid into a warmed jug or individual mugs or glasses.

Serve immediately.
