FRIENDLY SOCIETIES

These are societies formed to afford assistance to members in such matters as sick pay, medical attendance, old age, funeral expenses ; also to succour widows, orphans, the disabled, &c. Some friendly societies also provide facilities for gaining instruction in educational subjects, whilst others engage in insurance.

Every friendly society must consist of seven or more persons and be registered. There are about thirty thousand such societies in this country.
