CHILTERN HUNDREDS

Technically, a Member of Parliament cannot resign from the House, but the office of stewardship of the Chiltern Hundreds provides a means of escape where such is desired. Should a Member wish to withdraw from the House, he

H* applies for the above post and, as it is an office under the Crown, he must vacate his seat and seek re-election. Naturally, he refrains from again contesting his seat and his membership lapses. The stewardship carries no salary, no duties, and the position need not be filled for more than a day.
