Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are one of the major food groups, the others being proteins, fats, vitamins and mineral salts.

The foods high in the carbohydrate cat-egory are the flours and flour products (bread, cakes, biscuits and cereals), all

sugars, including sweets and jams, and a few vegetables and fruits, mainly the dried and canned fruits.

While a certain amount of carbo-hydrates should be included in the diet, too many will cause overweight. Sugars and sweets

should be eaten in limited quantities, particularly by children, as they have a bad effect on their teeth.

Meat, fish, dairy products and most fresh fruits and vegetables are low in carbohydrates. This is why these foods are generally eaten if one wishes to keep a constant weight.

In the following list the amount of carbohydrates is given in grams in each ounce of the particular food.
