To blend is to mix various ingredients together until they are completely com-bined. For instance, flour and butter are blended together to a smooth paste before milk or stock is added to make a sauce. When the liquid is added, it, too, is stirred and cooked until the sauce is smooth and blended.

Depending on the ingredients to be blended, blending is done with a wooden spoon, fork, wire whisk, rotary beater or electric blender.
