A marine animal which is also called sea cucumber, sea slug and trepang, beche-de-mer (besh d’mair) is the French adaptation of the Portuguese name bicho da mar, meaning ‘sea worm’.

Although not often eaten in the West, beche-de-mer soup is sometimes served in Chinese restaurants. The soup is sold in cans in some specialized shops.
