A member of the hawthorn family, the azarole tree grows in France, Italy, Algeria and Spain, where its fruit is used to make preserves and flavour liqueurs. The fruit resembles that of the hawthorn, but it is slightly larger. Its haws are usually orange-yellow or reddish in colour and have an apple-like flavour.
