Austria produces mostly light white wines, many of which are exported to Germany. Austria’s greatest wine, however, is considered to be Ruster Ausbruch, a golden dessert wine with a sweet and spicy aroma. The Heuriger, a fresh young wine, is the best-known product of Austrian vineyards.
Many of the Austrian wines are drunk when they are quite new. From the Wachau, one of the most beautiful wine areas in the world, come wines made from the Riesling grapes of the Rhine, which are similar in character to the German Rhine wines.
The pleasant white wine of Gumpoldskirchen is one of the internationally better-known Austrian exports.
