The partial or complete severance or rupture of a tendon is a painful and serious condition. It most commonly occurs with the Achilles tendon behind the heel. When this tears, a severe and marked pain is suffered and if the tendon ruptures there is often a loud crack and an individual feels as if somebody or something has hit the back of his leg. The foot becomes flexed if the entire tendon is ruptured or only a limited amount of extension is possible if some of the fibres are still intact. Tendon rupture elsewhere may not be all this dramatic but is equally painful.
Any injury that immobilizes an area should be reviewed by a doctor.
